Mindanao revealed some of the best and the brightest in the southern island of the country through the simultaneous celebration of the Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits (RICE) in Northern Mindanao, Davao, and SOCCSKSARGEN Regions on 16-18 November 2021 via the virtual platform.

The RICE in Mindanao: Regions X, XI, XII is conducted on 16-18 November 2021 via the virtual platform as it reveals the winners from Northern Mindanao, Davao, and SOCCSKSARGEN

Co-presented by the Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Regional Offices X, XI, and XII, the event brought together the outstanding inventions, utility models, industrial designs, creative researches, and student creative researchers.

“For years, RICE has been a viable component for the many lives of our Filipino inventors who have competed in the coveted contest – from a budding inventor to a household name in their chosen industry,” said DOST-TAPI Director Marion Ivy D. Decena during the rationale message.

There are six major categories to compete in: Tuklas Award for Outstanding Invention, Unlad Award for Outstanding Utility Model, Banghay Award for Outstanding Industrial Design, Likha Award for Outstanding Creative Research, and Sibol Award Outstanding Student Creative Research.

“A number of outstanding researchers and inventors have been produced by this country and have been a beacon of hope in becoming game-changers,” said DOST Secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña.

All of the winners took home cash prizes and certificates of recognition, while the first prize winners of each category are considered regional winners who will represent their region to the National Invention Contest and Exhibits (NICE) in 2022.

Northern Mindanao’s pride in using the region’s natural resources

RICE is a way of showcasing not only the most outstanding in the regions but also to feature the best assets the region can offer that is truly unique and commendable.

“The entries that we have received actually utilize the region’s natural resources to produce commercially competitive products and prototypes with very promising results in the fields of technological application,” said DOST-X Regional Director Alfonso P. Alamban during his inspirational message.

He also emphasized how innovation has become more of a necessity than an option with the fast-changing and demanding landscape that needs intuition to adapt to.

Davao’s resiliency during the pandemic

“Despite the challenging time we are in, it is indeed amazing how Filipinos have shown and proven our resiliency, adaptability, and ingenuity, which greatly helped us not only to survive but to thrive,” said DOST-XI Regional Director Anthony C. Sales during his welcome remarks.

He also emphasized that it is during the pandemic, that the power of science, technology, innovation, and engineering through DOST-TAPI and DOST Regional Offices, have shown the dedication and commitment of the Department to provide more and better opportunities and venues to the members S&T community especially the brilliant inventors, innovators, and student researchers.

SOCCSKSARGEN’s foundation is the people

RICE is one of the many initiatives of DOST in recognizing the contributions of inventions and innovations to national development as major key instrumentalities in initiating economic growth.

“The initiative and urgency to respond to the needs of the people is among the foundations of DOST,” said DOST-XII Regional Director Sammy P. Malawan during his inspirational message.

He also emphasized that RICE was established because of its positive impact on the Filipino community.
