The conclusion of this year’s Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits (RICE) was celebrated in Cagayan Valley as the region revealed the winners who will represent Region II at the National Invention Contest and Exhibits (NICE) in 2022.

RICE is a biennial event that recognizes the best and the brightest inventors, innovators, and researchers in the regions through a form of competition.

In collaboration with the Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI) and DOST Regional Office No. II (DOST-II) , RICE welcomed the winners of the Sibol Award for Outstanding Student Creative Research, Likha Award for Outstanding Creative Research, Banghay Award for Outstanding Industrial Design, and Unlad Award for Outstanding Utility Model.

“We encourage you to continue and experience participating in these kinds of contests as much as you can. Exposure puts more ideas into your subconscious and broadens your experience portfolio,” said Dr. Teresita A. Tabaog, Officer-in-Charge of DOST-II.

The Implementation of Virtual Voice Assistant Device for Early Detection of Earthquake and Tsunami, and the Theft and Accident Response Device for Motorcycle took the first place winners under the high school and college creative research categories, respectively.

Likewise, the Multi-Herbal Pulverizing Machine, the Pneumatic Grain Collector, and A Herbal Tea Composition of Malunggay Leaves and Bamboo Shoot were the grand winners of the creative research, industrial design, and utility model categories, respectively.

Unlad Award for Outstanding Utility Model

  1. First Prize Winner: A Herbal Tea Composition of Malunggay Leaves and Bamboo Shoot by Andy L. Catulin
  2. Second Prize Winner: Movable Solar AC & DC Generator by Romel B. Cristobal and Oscar G. Bangayan
  3. Third Prize Winner: Process of Producing Lubeg (Syzygium spp.)-Flavored Yogurt by Macluven T. Gonzales, Andrea M. Flores-Dawan, and Angelina T. Gonzales

Banghay Award for Outstanding Industrial Design

  1. First Prize Winner: Pneumatic Grain Collector by Dr. Sony P. Aquino
  2. Second Prize Winner: Multi-fruit Harvesting and Pruning Device by Angelito D. Agrimor, Dr. Sony P. Aquino, Emmanuel C. Reyes, and Eddie C. Tampoya
  3. Third Prize Winner: DVD Player Simulator by Romel B. Cristobal and Oscar G. Bangayan

Likha Award for Outstanding Creative Research

  1. First Prize Winner: Multi-Herbal Pulverizing Machine by Cesar B. Mangadap, Joel M. Alcaraz, and King Dominic C. Hidalgo
  2. Second Prize Winner: Tray Dryer for Medicinal Plants by Joel M. Alcaraz, Cesar B. Mangadap, and King Dominic C. Hidalgo
  3. Third Prize Winner: Pinoy Gourmix Food Product by Vanessa Joy F. Calderon, Rose Mary G. Aquino, Rolando D. Pedro, Sheryl A. De Guzman, and Camille O. Fernandez

  1. First Prize Winner: Theft and Accident Response Device for Motorcycle by Aljorey Eduard C. Bernaser, Rudy T. Beninsig, and Angely Frogoso
  2. Second Prize Winner: iSakay: An Android Based Transport Mobile Application by Jemelle D. Fernandez and Oliver G. Maramag
  3. Third Prize Winner: Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) Assessment Device by Joanne Darlene C. Gosiengfiao and Kent Rocky Jade Q. Morla

Sibol Award for Outstanding High School Student Creative Research

  1. First Prize Winner: Project VVAsAC: The Implementation of Virtual Voice Assistant Device for Early Detection of Earthquake and Tsunami by Rodrigo A. Lugo and Cyrille Jane M. Anapi
  2. Second Prize Winner: Soy Protein Based Film with Perantes (Citrus sinensis L. Osb.) Pectin Enhancer as Alternative Bioplastic by Angela Briones, Julia Navarrete, and Eva Palattao
  3. Third Prize Winner: Banana (Musa balbisiana) and Pineapple (Ananas comosus) Peelings as Potential Source of Bioethanol by Nathaniel Lorenzo R. Caronan, Marc Andre T. Callueng, and Clayborne Benedict U. Orteza
