Sixty-three finalists vied for the chance to become the outstanding invention, innovation, and research during the 2022 National Invention Contest and Exhibit (NICE) on 22-24 June 2022 via virtual platform.
Organized by the Technology Application and Promotion Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-TAPI), NICE showcases the creativity and ingenuity of Filipino inventors in developing relevant inventions and innovations as a way to contribute to social and economic development.

“NICE is one of the many initiatives of the Institute in showcasing the ingenuity of Filipino innovators in developing high-impact technologies and innovations, and the quest for excellence in innovative endeavors,” said DOST-TAPI Director, Atty. Marion Ivy D. Decena.
Through Republic Act (RA) 7459 or the Inventors and Invention Incentives Act of the Philippines, the contest provides credit and encouragement to local inventors and researchers for their hard work and persistence.
“We have helped the past winners and finalists of NICE to provide solutions to areas they are having difficulty in, such as concept prototyping, prototype development, pilot production and market testing, and laboratory testing up to the eventual commercialization of their inventions,” said DOST Secretary Fortunato T. de la Peña.
As a stepping stone for inventors, DOST provides a platform in helping inventors grow to become an enterprise as they gain confidence in operating and marketing their inventions.
One winner was declared in each of the five categories of NICE namely, Tuklas Award for Outstanding Invention, Unlad Award for Outstanding Utility Model, Banghay Award for Outstanding Industrial Design, Likha Award for Outstanding Creative Research, and Sibol Award for Student Creative Research.

The Greenhouse-type Solar Dryer System Retrofitted with Biomass Furnace, which consists of a drying section, biomass furnace system, air distribution system, and greenhouse drying chamber, bagged the outstanding invention this year.
Winning a cash gift of Php 300,000.00, a DOST-TAPI plaque and a certificate, and a World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) gold medal, the invention can complete the drying of fermented cacao beans from an initial moisture content of 66.2 percent to a final moisture content of 7.4 percent after 77.5 hours.
Subsequently, the Multi-fuel Dryer won the outstanding utility model, walking away with a cash gift of Php 200,000.00, a DOST-TAPI plaque and a certificate, and a WIPO plaque.
Meanwhile, the Ground Heat Exchanger System for Aeroponics won the outstanding industrial design with a cash gift of Php 200,000.00, a DOST-TAPI plaque and a certificate, and a WIPO plaque.
Some of the criteria used to find the best and the brightest in the country are commercial viability, technical advantage, market potential, originality, and degree of development, among others.
“I see a great deal with the finalists this year as I expect everyone, not only the winners, to continue their invention journey towards commercialization especially for those who have already secured their intellectual properties in forms of patents, registrations, or certificates.,” said the Chairperson of the Screening Committee of the RA 7459, Dr. Romulo T. Aggangan.
The search for the best and the brightest inventions and researches continues next year through the conduct of the Regional Invention Contest and Exhibits (RICE).

- Second Prize - Water Level Monitoring Station with Rain Gauge (Tandem) by Gerwin P. Guba
- Third Prize - Submerged Plastic Fish Cage by Ralph A. Cabrera
