Bicutan, Taguig City - As we approach the 38th Anniversary of DOST-TAPI, the Institute takes a moment to reflect on three (3) successful events it held last year, in collaboration with the Asian and Pacific Center for Transfer of Technology (APCTT).

Regional Forum on Innovative and Emerging Technologies to Address Climate Change

The Regional Forum on Innovative and Emerging Technologies to Address Climate Change, held on September 03 to 04, 2024, at the Sheraton Hotel, Manila, convened with experts, policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholders to discuss innovative solutions for combating climate change.  Key discussions circulated from renewable energy technologies, climate-smart agriculture, sustainable urban development, disaster risk reduction, and climate finance.

Ms. Preeti Soni, Head of APCTT, emphasized the role of technology transfer and regional cooperation in addressing climate change, she stated, “We have the tools to make a difference, but we need to work collectively to make it happen.”

Atty. Marion Ivy D. Decena, Vice Chair of APCTT and Director of DOST-TAPI, highlighted the importance of collaboration and innovation in building a climate-resilient country. “This forum is more than a mere gathering - it is the manifestation of a long-awaited vision in the Philippines to combat climate change.”

The forum featured presentations by Mr. Soumya Bhattacharya, Economic Affairs Officer, APCTT, on the role of technology as an enabler for combating climate change, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region - focusing on issues and challenges.  Dr. Clyde Hutchinson, Technology Specialist at the ADB-Korea Climate Technology Hub (K-Hub), Asian Development Bank, discussed sustainable urban planning, the transition to renewable energy, and the significance of disaster risk management.

Dr. Marcelino Q. Villafuerte, Deputy Administrator for R&D and Scientist I, of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (DOST-PAGASA), presented on trends in technological advancements in the Philippines in mitigating and adapting to climate change.

Workshop on Strategic Approaches to Assessing Market Potential for Technology Innovations

Following the forum, on September 05, 2024, at the Hilton Manila Hotel, DOST-TAPI and APCTT conducted a “Workshop on Strategic Approaches to Assessing Market Potential for Technology Innovations”.  This workshop equipped the participants with the tools and knowledge to navigate the complex landscape of technology commercialization.

Some of the events’ features included exploring various methodologies for understanding customer needs and market dynamics, identifying emerging trends and anticipating market shifts, utilizing APCTT’s Tech Monitor platform to access comprehensive market intelligence and identify international market trends, and learning from real-world examples of successful technology commercialization.

Technology and Innovation Conclave 1.0

Furthermore, Atty. Marion Ivy D. Decena represented the Philippines at the Technology and Innovation Conclave 1.0, held from September 24 to 26, 2024, in New Delhi, India. This international platform, organized by APCTT and the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, brought together a gathering of distinguished experts, innovators, and policymakers from all over the world to delve into the latest advancements in energy storage and green hydrogen technologies.

The Conclave served as a bridge for collaboration and knowledge sharing - it provided an opportunity to showcase the Philippines’ commitment to sustainable energy and technological innovation.  CHRG EV Technologies, presented by Engr. Leo Allen Tayo is one of the known names in the Philippine EV industry and was honored to participate in and show its innovations, specifically the Charging in Minutes (CharM) technology and advanced Solar Powered EV Charging Stations.

Throughout these events, Atty. Decena expressed her gratitude for the valuable collaborations fostered during the year, specifically with APCTT: “As the Vice Chair of the Governing Council of APCTT, I look forward to continued partnership and impactful events this 2025, which aim to advance technological innovation and address critical challenges within the country.”
